The season has started earlier than expected.

Budburst has arrived early here in Piemonte — something we’re seeing more frequently with shifting seasonal patterns. Warmer late winters and early spring temperatures are accelerating the vine’s natural cycle.

While early growth can suggest an earlier harvest, it also brings increased vulnerability. Young shoots are highly sensitive to temperature drops, and even without frost forecasted, the unpredictability of these conditions is one of the greatest challenges in modern viticulture.

For us, sustainability isn’t a concept — it’s a constant response. It means observing more closely, intervening less, and adapting to what each season gives us rather than forcing consistency.

Climate change in the vineyard doesn’t always arrive as extremes. Often, it’s subtle — a shift in timing, in balance, in rhythm.

This is where every vintage begins. And every year, it asks something different of us.

Terroir isn’t just a word. It’s the story beneath our feet.

In Costigliole d’Asti, that story began millions of years ago, when these hills were still under the sea. As the waters receded, they left behind layers of limestone, clay, and marine sediments - soils that still define how our vines grow and how our wines taste today.

At Tenuta Il Finale, we work with three distinct terroirs, all within the same landscape, yet each shaping the vine in its own way. Limestone brings tension and freshness, clay adds depth and structure, and the slopes and exposures guide ripeness and aromatics. The same grape, grown in each site, tells a different story.

Over time, it became clear that the land already knew what worked best here. That’s why we focus on native varieties - Barbera, Nebbiolo, Arneis - grapes that have adapted to these conditions over centuries. By growing what belongs, we farm more sustainably, intervene less, and allow each vineyard to express itself with clarity.

An unforgettable evening celebrating the beauty of aged Italian wine. 🍷

This week in London, we had the privilege of attending a remarkable tasting of aged Brunello di Montalcino, hosted by the wonderful team at the Liberation Tardive Foundation at Zafferano Restaurant.

The evening explored the evolution of Brunello from 1995 onwards, presented by three exceptional wineries and guided by Dominic Buckwell, whose passion for wines reaching their full potential is truly inspiring.

Among the guests were some of the most respected voices in the wine world, including Jancis Robinson, leading Italian wine importers, and Decanter’s Italian editor — a room filled with people who truly understand the story behind great wine.

We felt genuinely grateful to be part of such a meaningful evening. As one of the early supporters of the Liberation Tardive Foundation, it was special to see its mission shared with such an influential audience.

In Piemonte, we understand that patience is part of the craft. Great wines are never rushed — they evolve, deepen, and reveal their character over time.

In Piemonte, winter is when the vineyard teaches patience.

Between January and early March, while the vines are dormant, every plant is carefully pruned by hand. It’s one of the most important decisions of the entire growing season. At Tenuta Il Finale, we prune using the Guyot system, a traditional method used across Piemonte for quality wine production.

From the many canes a vine grows during summer, most are removed. We leave:
• one fruiting cane with 8–10 buds and one renewal spur with 2 buds

Each bud will become a shoot in spring, and each shoot may carry grape clusters. By limiting the number of buds, we control the balance of the vine — influencing yield, airflow, ripening and ultimately the quality of the fruit.

So while the vineyard may look bare in winter, this is where the next vintage quietly begins.
